Parliament Hill School

Client: Farrans
Location: Highgate, London

Conneely Construction were the Groundworks Contractor at the Parliament Hill School Extension Project in Kentish Town, NW5 1RL.

There is a 2,500mm diameter Thames Water culvert running through the site and under one of the main new build blocks. So to construct over the culvert 42no. 750mm diameter piles had to be capped off with a new 1,800m3 bridging slab. This bridging slab is approximately 1,000m2 in area with an average depth in excess of 1,700mm.

First there was an extensive dig and the supply and fix of over 400 tonne of rebar. Due to this being a live school the pour had to go ahead on a weekend. For this to happen there were various meetings with the local council and the different resident committees to get approval for a 24 hour pour. From late March the pour was fixed for Saturday 28th April. On the morning of Saturday the 28th we set up with 2no. concrete pumps and one on standby. The first load arrived on site at 07.30 and the last concrete lorry left site at 22.45 that Saturday night. In total 1,780m3 was poured in less than 16 hours at an average rate of 115m3 per hour. This was 8 hours ahead of target. This was a tremendous achievement by all involved in the pour especially when you consider that the school is in a busy part of North West London and there is only one vehicle gate to access and egress the site.
